CHAPTER 26

AZRAEL

A peal of thunder pulled Azrael from dreamless sleep, a warm embrace of shadows that reluctantly brought him to his senses. His eyes struggled to focus on the darkened shape beside him, breathing quietly. He finally discerned the small slope of Lark’s shoulders, the scent of lavender and sea salt faintly in the bed, amongst others that caused Azrael to make a mental note to wash his sheets. He was acutely aware of the soft fabric against his bare skin, the coolness of the bed beneath him. His only pillow was beneath Lark’s head, so he bent his arm and nestled his head against the muscles of his bicep.

Dull grey light leaked in from the cracked bedroom door, slowly putting an end to the night he hadn’t wanted to end. He didn’t know how much sleep he had gotten, but between the ache in his body—the good kind—and the heaviness in his eyes, he knew he hadn’t slept much at all.

Once his eyes adjusted and the grey illuminated his room enough, he reached over to Lark and carefully, with his middle finger, brushed a stray lock of hair off her face, pushing it onto her bare back. Her mouth was slightly agape, facing him, and it still did not feel real to him. It may as well have been a realistic dream, despite all that they had shared last night, and he wondered how often he would be able to dream this—or if this had been the only time he would experience her in this way.

“I can hear your heartbeat.” Her words were whispered, muffled by the pillow, before flame popped in the fireplace and warmth spread into the room. Lark’s eyes remained closed, but her hand inched towards him.

“I’d imagine so. You and my heart speak the same language,” Azrael mumbled.

A tiny smile cracked her sleepy face, and she opened her eyes. With her smile, he hadn’t expected to find sadness residing in her gaze before it turned serious.

“You cannot breathe a word,” she murmured, repeating herself from the night before, her hand grasping his. She scooted closer, hooking her leg around his to draw him in. “It’s a secret my mother fought to protect and one the king would sooner bury.”

He knew she meant the magic she had shown him, the ability that had taken his breath away. He had nearly let it slip his thoughts, how her shadows had worked their way into his head, into the darkness of his mind to plant images and feelings. Unease settled back into his stomach as he thought of it. He didn’t like the idea of another person inside his head.

Nonetheless, it was now Azrael’s life hanging in the balance with hers. There was no going back, no bowing out gracefully, no keeping his head down any longer. If she was going down, he’d go down with her.

“I still don’t understand how it works,” he said quietly. He didn’t understand how any of her magic worked in a land
